Mentorship at AIT program (MAIT): What is it? Goals? How does it work? Intended audience?

What is mentoring?

One of the most successful ways of helping students link to industry and prepare for the transition out of university and into the workplace. Mentoring is a one-on-one partnership between a more experienced person (the MENTOR) and someone who is less experienced (the MENTEE).

The student mentee seeks advice and information about their career direction and employment goals whilst the mentor shares their industry/workplace skills, experiences and insights and takes an active interest in the career transition needs of the student. The relationship is based on mutual respect, encouragement, constructive feedback, openness and a willingness to learn and share.

Length of the Program

I suggest that the program run initially for a year and we have limited places on the program (depending on how many mentee's volunteer; maybe around 10). It would be easier for the mentors to sign up for a year, see how they go with it and then renew their committment to the program. The same goes for the mentees. Moreover, some new mentors/mentees would want to join after a year or so

Who is this prgram directed towards?

* Any SE, TE or BE student from any branch

What's in it for the Mentor?

* Satisfaction of helping/mentoring
* Maybe a certificate/or something written that the person was
involved in the program from the alumni committee
* Renewing and forming deeper bond with your alma mater
* Keeping an eye on the progress of your alma mater
* Increasing the profile of the college which in turn increases your
on profile

1. Goals of the program

* Support students in making the transition from university to the
workplace;
* Provides students with an industry/workplace perspective to
enhance their academic learning
* Establish mutually beneficial relationships between alumni, the
college and its students and
* Provide students with a prespective of Post Graduate degrees
(MBA/Mtech/MS/PhD etc)

2. Expectations from the alumni mentors

* Meet each other face to face (if possible) at least once every
three months
* Maintain monthly telephone and/or email contact
* Devote atleast 4 hrs a month to the mentee student discussing a
providing guidance on mutually accepted topics
* Complete an online evaluation regarding the mentorship program
* Be there for the student when he needs the mentor

3. Expectation from student mentee

* Be serious about the mentorship program
* Devote time and effort to develop a successful relationship with
the mentors
* Complete an online evaluation regarding the mentorship program
* If possible, volunteer to be a mentor after graduating from college

4. Mentor responsibility

* Agree on a regular, mutually convenient contact schedule
* Decide on mutually agreed goals and benefits for both (such as
mundane issues like how to top the class? etc etc)
* Advise mentee if unable to attend scheduled meetings
* Observe confidentiality and personal boundaries
* Encourage exploration of ideas and facilitate self-directed learning
* Encourage mentee's strengths and help them work on their weaknesses
* Check on the effectiveness of the communication - are we connecting?
* Check on the effectiveness of the relationship - is the mentee
making progress?
* Contact the MAIT Co-ordinator if any concerns arise
* Complete an online evaluation regarding the mentorship program

5. Mentee responsibility

* Complete the Mentoring Agreement in conjunction with the mentee
* Decide on mutually agreed goals and benefits for both
* Agree on a regular, mutually convenient contact schedule
* Advise mentor if unable to attend scheduled meetings
* Observe confidentiality and personal / professional boundaries
* Be receptive to feedback and suggestions from the mentor
* Explore own strengths and weaknesses and set relevant goals
* Fulfil commitments as agreed or negotiate changes
* Complete an online evaluation regarding the mentorship program
* Take up opportunities for networking and building professional
relationships
* Contact the MAIT Co-ordinator if any concerns arise

Hi Sir,

I really liked this kind of initiative as I think it would be really helpful....I have couple of suggestions.

Their should be a list of mentors with their specialization from which the student can choose from.
(Like CS, E&TC, MECH as well as subgroups, to be as specific as possible) If its not related to industry one can just guide student about studies or extra curricular technical projects or BE Projec which they might want to do or compete in.

The mentors should be given an option regarding the meeting or type of commuication, bcoz i think most of us are abroad so it would be difficult to meet every three months. Once decided both parties should abide by it.

I think a website for sole purpose of this can be made and proper logins should be issued so that people can paste article abt some things ranging from development to management totally targeted to AIT students and also put down goals for the specific students being mentored ( I can take initiative on this - anyone want to share a hand? )

I am still thinking....many more to come.....

Hi Ravi,

Why don't we begin by letting the mentor-mentee (if I may continue using this word) define their own set of goals/landmarks?

But that is subsequent to setting up a functional framework. Since we already have people interested in signing up, let's look at a week (or two) timeframe of getting the entire list?

I am sure there must be tons of things that people would want to do as a part of this and I am pretty excited in being a part of it. What we need is a kick off at ground level!

hi ravi and rishi,

i will take your suggestions on board. we plan to let mentor and mentees choose each other. nothing will be forced. this is about building a mutual relationship.

ravi, would you be willing to expand on the website concept.let me know?
