MAIT program: Update 2

Dear All

At the end of 2007, I take the opportunity to give you all a brief update on the MAIT program.

We have got off to a good steady start and have generated strong interest among the students at college. Around 8 students (month of Nov-Dec) from college have registered and many more have shown enthusiasm in registering. The number is low due to ongoing viva and theory examinations in the college. We expect many more students to register in the month of Jan-Feb 2008. Around 30 mentors from the alumni group have also registered till now.

We have decided to extend the registration period for mentors till 15/02/2008. If you want to register, please send me a mail (tdr2@hotmail.com) and include your gmail/orkut ID in it. I need to give you permission to access the spreadsheet. You can then follow this link (http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=pL5tgpTtxAO2R1FiV4JC9YA&hl=en&pli=1) and update your details in the spreadsheet. I would strongly reccommend the MAIT program to the alumni members.

A major drawback in the program is that no lady mentor from the alumni group has shown interest or has registered to take part in MAIT. Could I kindly request the ladies to give a serious thought to the MAIT program. Your experiences and exposure in the corporate/public sector/army worlds would be give the students in college a very different perspective to life.

A presentation to the students at AIT on the details for the MAIT program will be given by Rishi Tiwari (Mech 2001) at college. The date for the presentation needs to be confirmed and it will most probably be in middle Jan 2008, as the students in college have their exams now. I would strongly suggest that alumni based in PUNE, who are interested or would like to know more about MAIT, to attend the presentation.

More info about the MAIT program can be found at:

aitmentor.blogspot.com

Thanks are due to the mentors and students who have registered for their enthusiasm and support.

Please do not hesitate to give me a mail if you require further info on the MAIT program. Could I also request the alumni members to give wide publicity to the MAIT program. If possible, please forward this message to other alumni egroups etc.

Hoping for wider participation in MAIT from the alumni and student community.

Mentorship at AIT program (MAIT): What is it? Goals? How does it work? Intended audience?

What is mentoring?

One of the most successful ways of helping students link to industry and prepare for the transition out of university and into the workplace. Mentoring is a one-on-one partnership between a more experienced person (the MENTOR) and someone who is less experienced (the MENTEE).

The student mentee seeks advice and information about their career direction and employment goals whilst the mentor shares their industry/workplace skills, experiences and insights and takes an active interest in the career transition needs of the student. The relationship is based on mutual respect, encouragement, constructive feedback, openness and a willingness to learn and share.

Length of the Program

I suggest that the program run initially for a year and we have limited places on the program (depending on how many mentee's volunteer; maybe around 10). It would be easier for the mentors to sign up for a year, see how they go with it and then renew their committment to the program. The same goes for the mentees. Moreover, some new mentors/mentees would want to join after a year or so
